Donatos Pizza: Delivery Driver to Design Leader

Donatos Pizza, a family-owned Ohio legend since 1963, is famous for its thin-crust pizzas loaded Edge to Edge® with toppings. But even legends need to evolve. Over my 14-year tenure, the market shifted dramatically. I helped steer the brand’s evolution, navigating a cutthroat market, pivoting to a digital-first world, and scaling franchise operations without losing the brand's community-centric soul. I did it all with a perspective few leaders ever get.

My journey started behind the wheel of a '97 Jeep Cherokee Sport that boiled engine coolant when it topped 55 mph. As a delivery driver, I got a real-world crash course in the customer experience. I saw how a simple coupon made pizza night possible for a family. I felt the pressure of a frantic Friday rush and saw the relief on a customer's face when their pizza arrived hot and on time. I didn’t have to guess what customers wanted or what our stores were up against, I lived it every single day.

Digital Transformation: Social Media & Email

I built community and celebrated our biggest fans on social channels. My role was to capture Donatos Pizza’s energy and translate it into scroll-stopping content. We showed up authentically where our customers were, making them hungry for more (pizza, obviously).

For email, I focused on creating a design system that made our communications incredibly versatile and efficient. We needed to speak to our most loyal Rewards members and those with specific dietary preferences while keeping the Donatos Pizza brand sharp and consistent.

My design system enabled us to produce hundreds of custom emails annually with speed and precision. We launched promotions faster, personalized content more effectively, and ultimately, grew our Rewards members by offering a visually engaging and consistent experience that kept them coming back. The focus for email design was about building relationships and driving action.

Art Direction

I knew firsthand that what made our pizza different was its unapologetic abundance of toppings. Competitors had to shoot their pizzas from a distance to hide the gaps, so I realized we could do the opposite. My strategy was to turn the camera into a magnifying glass, embracing tight, macro shots to prove there wasn't a single bald spot on our pizza. We used intentional lighting to make every cupped pepperoni glisten and every shred of cheese feel essential. This confident, close-up approach became our visual language, telling a story of abundance our competition couldn't match.

I led the design for countless in-store and at-home print pieces: flyers, coupons, and promotional materials that spoke directly to our customers. This consistent visual strategy also paved the way for our website’s look and feel. By establishing strong visual guidelines and a cohesive aesthetic for print, we created a seamless brand experience that effortlessly translated to the digital world, ensuring our online presence was as inviting and recognizable as walking into one of our restaurants. Every visual element had a purpose and told a part of the Donatos Pizza story.

Pizza, Purpose, and What's Next

My time at Donatos taught me that the work is about the people you serve. One of my proudest moments was designing the Pelotonia jerseys for the Donatos "Powered By Pepperoni" cycling team, which raised money for cancer research. Seeing those designs worn with pride for a vital cause was a powerful reminder of design’s real-world impact.

My journey, from delivering pizzas in Columbus to shaping brand strategy for 464 locations across 29 states, gave me a rare blend of street-level insight and high-level creative direction. I am proud of the growth I helped drive and am eager to bring this unique perspective to new projects. See my latest work below!
